Professor Dong has carried out a wide range of teaching and research on space structures including thin-shell structures, space trusses, lattice shells and tensile structures over four decades.



In the field of long-span space structures, Prof. Dong has established and proposed many new theories and methods, including the sandwich plate analogy method for space grid structures, the new method for the triangular pyramid space grid of honeycomb pattern - the lower chord internal force method, the practical application theory and calculation formulae for composite space trusses, the design method for the load-carrying capacity of welded hollow spherical joints under combined axial forces and bending moments, and the quick calculation method for initial prestress distribution for cable domes of Geiger- and Sunflower- type. Prof. Dong is the principal investigator of four projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China including Stability, ultimate load-bearing capacity and rational forms of space grids, and the level of research is world advanced. Prof. Dong’s research results have found successful applications in many important spatial structures, such as Capital Sports Hall, Islamabad Gymnasium (Pakistan) and National Swimming Center Water Cube for the 2008 Olympic Games. He has won 14 awards for Progress in Science and Technology at national and provincial/ministerial (First/Second Grade) levels. He is the founder and the editor-in-chief of the Journal Spatial Structures (in Chinese). Prof. Dong has published over 200 technical papers and several books including Analytical theory and calculation method of space grid structures and Analysis, design and construction of new space structures. Prof. Dong also provides strong technical supports on several manufacturers of space structures including Zhejiang Southeast Space Frame Company and Hangzhou Dadi Space Truss Company, which have been the most famous companies in this field in China.
